I'm not as young as I used to be

Every year around the beginning of November, with my birthday coming up on the 23rd, I start to get a little introspective. This post on Rif's blog got me thinking as soon as I read it.

http://rifsblog.blogspot.com/2007/10/its-almost-easy-to-forgetespecially.html

Looking back on my own life, I am constantly reminded that I am healthier, happy and better off now that at any time in my life. God saw fit to keep me alive through all the stupid self-destructive Rockstar shit that I did in my 20's, then led me to the RKC.

I meet people all the time who talk about getting fat, back pain, etc., and then they'll say somrthing like "It sucks getting older" or " I'm not as young as I used to be".

Recently I had a conversation with someone that started with "I guess I need to do something to lose this weight" Of course I started talking about kettlebell training, describing in detail what my class is like. I got a response that KBs are "fine for younger people like you (me), but when you get my age, it's alot easier to hurt your back".

I asked how old they were after a comment like this and the response was "36".

I asked "How old do you think I am?"

"I dunno....26? 27?"

I will be 38 in a little over 3 weeks. I am in better condition, stronger and healthier than I was at 28. Some of the stuff that I am able to do now--Thanks to traing with Pavel and the RKC--are beyond anything I ever imagined, and I ain't done yet. I'm not as young as I used to be....I am younger.

Dave,

I was reflecting on this today, as I turned 39 myself. A year of training with kettlebells, some BW exercises, and a sensible diet has taken me from 197# to 175-180#, 36" to 34" waist, and a much healthier man than I was on my 38th birthday. I expect that I will be much healthier and fitter on my 40th than I am today.

Keep doing what you're doing, and enjoy your birthday.

it's amazing isnt it?how something so simple can make such a huge difference.I mean I am FIFTY freking years old but I dont know what that is supposed to mean anymore. I still think I can improve for a seriosly long time.
In some very real ways to the very end.why not?
kbs build you up without breaking you down. huge difference over most training methods. huge.
great post david and great training these days as well.

Nice post Dave!
It looks like many of us have had the same thing on our minds. I just posted (29th) about how great my back feels and how glad I am decided to get serious about Kbells.

38 is only old if you think it is. I know you don't but I bristle when I hear folks talk about being old in their 30's. Excuses and ignorance!

I'm 45 and overall stronger and more sound than ever. And there is no end in sight.

Have a Happy Birthday Dave. I'll be turning 39 in January, and am in the same boat as you all. Since I started training with kettlebells, my weight has dropped from 174 to 163lbs, while increasing my conditioning, maintaing my strength, keeping my shoulders healthy and having fun doing it. Ordering that first kb was the best thing I have done for myself in years.

Rock on David! It's funny how people will use age, injuries, their job, their family..or whatever else to justify their mediocre state. I turn 34 this month and been doing the similar reflecting like you have.

KB's and RKC system have been the DIFFERENCE! I think there alot of people that we know who could say the exact same thing!

HA! My best friend can outrun most people I know, go through INTENSE KB training on a regular basis, go about 10 rounds on the heavy bag (knocking the bad clean to the floor!) AND he is 47 yrs old!

Who decided what a NUMBER dictates anyway?

Dave, I just hit 47 a couple of months ago and I feel great. I'm not in the shape that most of you are in but I make a lot of kids gasp for air in the dojo.

Enjoy your day.
